Frequently Asked Questions
Skaters are expected to be fully dressed and in their skates 10 minutes prior to class time. This allows skaters to be grouped appropriately prior to class start time. Late skaters disrupt the class as well as the entire program. Once ready, it is required that the skater is seated in the appropriate waiting area so that coaches may gather skaters and escort them on the ice. NorthStar Ice Sports has 3 skating rinks and is an extremely busy facility (especially in the winter months). Plan on arriving 20 minutes prior to class time to find a parking spot, check in, get rental skates, etc.
Yes, skate rentals are available on a first come, first serve basis for $5 CASH ONLY
Rental skates are HIGHLY recommended for beginners for the first few lessons before purchasing skates. Rental skates are more designed for quick learning due to the shape of the blade. Double blade skates are not permitted. Please consult with a Staff Member prior to purchasing skates. Our facility’s Pro Shop (located in the Rink A Lobby) sells beginner skates.
No. Parents are not allowed on the ice with the skaters. Spectators are required to watch in the upstairs bleachers to allow skaters to focus on their lessons and coach.
A warm jacket and Snow pants are recommended to keep your skater warm and from getting wet when he/she falls. Gloves or mittens are recommended so that hands stay warm. Bike, Ski or Hockey Helmets are strongly recommended for skater safety. Please do not dress your skater in hockey gear.
Fun and games are always incorporated into the lessons. Your skater will have 25 minutes of class and 25 minutes of free skate time to practice. Practice time is a great opportunity for the skater to practice their skills on their own, or with the other skaters. The practice time is typically supervised by our student teachers and there is no formal instruction.
All brand-new skaters ages 4-6 will start with Snowplow Sam 1*, and all new skaters ages 7-14 will start with Basic 1*. Testing is done during the session to determine level of skater should you choose to sign up again. *Snowplow Sam levels are introductory classes into four progressive levels allowing children with no prior skating experience to build confidence while learning the basic skills. These levels are designed for skaters ages 4-6. *Basic Skills teaches the fundamentals of ice skating and provides the best foundation for figure skating and hockey in six progressive levels. These levels are designed for skaters ages 7-14. Each skater will receive a Certificate of Achievement on the last day of class.
No. NorthStar does not offer make up classes.
